The Hawk Fire did not stay on the mountain.

It started Saturday on the Peavine Peak side of the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest, northwest of Reno, and by Sunday the National Interagency Fire Center map had it at 15,040 acres, as reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal. Local fire briefings still had it at zero contained. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said the fire jumped trucks Saturday night and that changing winds made the ground confusing for crews and for people trying to leave.

The Associated Press, citing local officials, said at least six people were hurt — three first responders and three civilians — and that homes in northwest Reno were destroyed. Officials called the fire human-caused. They did not say whether that meant a campfire, equipment, or something set on purpose. This desk is not filling that gap.

About 42,000 people were under a GO NOW order Sunday. Another 45,000 sat in the warning zone. Those two rings together are the “about 90,000” number moving on the wires. The GO NOW line reached the edge of the University of Nevada, Reno, where students were still moving in. Two hospitals moved patients. Portions of U.S. 395 were closed. Power outages in Washoe County were near 10,000 Sunday, down from about 60,000 Saturday, the AP reported.

Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency and called the Nevada National Guard: two helicopter crews for water and about 60 troops to help hold empty neighborhoods. About 800 fire personnel were on it. The Reno-Sparks Convention Center, Hall 4, was the civilian shelter. Pets were sent to other sites. This is a weather-and-fuel fire on a dry year. Fifteen new starts hit Nevada on Saturday alone, officials told AP. Containment is the number that is still zero.
